It’s hard to believe 2024 is here already, but winter anime is here, Christmas is finished, and New Year’s is behind us. Not only in strength, but also in the thrilling kind. Whatever you think of ecchi series, Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete is without a doubt the one that will define the genre this year as a whole.

Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete, according to the RandomC Preview, is essentially what happens when you combine the edginess of Madoka with the harem lasciviousness of early 2010. In this universe, magical girls are a constant; they’re constantly in motion, always soaring through the air, and, in the case of the reclusive and lonely Hiiragi Utena (Izumi Fuuka), constantly something to be envied and looked up to. However, Utena ends up having the chance of a lifetime when the traditional mascot Venalita (Fukuen Mizato) appears to transform Utena into a magical girl of a different kind. You see, Venalita is of the bad kind, and she has determined that Utena is the ideal person to continue wicked activities since, in her heart, she wants to punish them more than be a magical girl. Hard. This is where Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete sets itself apart: the focus of the program is on supernatural girls gone bad.

Despite its brief synopsis, Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete is actually stronger and more interesting than it first appears. First of all, it fully commits to its ecchi comedy, putting minimal effort into filthy transformation sequences and, let’s say, creative takes on magical girl comeuppances (and in one of its airing versions, having practically no censoring). Some really heartbreaking sequences were created by the show’s cunning decision to playfully highlight the obvious sadomasochist overtones without completely giving in to them, especially when it came to Utena discovering she truly enjoys using the whip. or a tentacle. Or, better still, just fully indulging in an orgasmic state of bliss. Add to that the fact that it’s all very much not a BDSM session affair, essentially one huge blackmail ploy on Venalita’s side, and his forthright resolve to not back down from it, and, sweetheart, you’ve got yourself a very entertaining setting. It’s unclear how long that setup will last, but if Utena continues to provide such amazing reaction faces, it will go longer than you might think.

With good animation and a comedy-focused theme, Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete is an ecchi anime that fans of the genre should definitely keep an eye on, even though a few more episodes will be necessary to fully understand the program’s overall storyline—err, other plot. I dare say it will be this season’s true guilty pleasure due to its risqué imagery and penchant for gut-busting, suggestive humor.
